English Vocabulary Word List#6


1. adjudicate

Meaning: make a formal judgement on a disputed matter;
                 a) to make a decision in a legal case or proceeding
                 b) to study and settle a dispute or conflict
                 c) to act as a judge of a contest
Synonym: Try, judge, adjudge, arbitrate, decide, decree
Usage: "He was invited to adjudicate the singing competition."
             
2. appalling
Meaning: to fill with horror, shock or dismay; 
                   fill with apprehension or alarm; 
                   cause to be unpleasantly surprised.
Synonym: outrage, shock, dismay, frighten
Antonym: beautiful, comforting, calming, encouraging
Usage: "Prisoners there, were kept under the most appalling conditions."

3. apprehension
Meaning: a) fear or anxiety over what may happen
                 b) the act of seizing or capturing; arrest
                 c) the ability to comprehend or understand

Synonym: uneasiness, anxiety, worry, trepidation, fear
Antonym: easiness, confidence, misunderstanding

Usage: "A gang of thieves was apprehended by the police last night."

4. abject
Meaning: a) utterly wretched or hopeless; miserable, forlorn, dejected
                 b) contemptible, despicable
                 c) servile, submissive; slavish
Synonym:   wretched, miserable, hopeless, dismal

Antonym: commendable, exalted, excellent, magnificent
Usage: "They were living in abject poverty."


5. compliant
Meaning: a) obedient; inclined or willing to comply
                 b) In compliance, as with a standard or regulation
Synonym: docile, willing, flexible, submissive, manageable
Antonym: obstinate, peevish, unyielding, dogged
Usage: " The boy was compliant enough that the teacher ignored his silly mistakes."

6. dereliction
Meaning: a) wilful neglect, as of duty or principle; 
                     deliberate, conscious or wilful neglect. 
                  b) the act of abandoning or deserting; 
                      the state of being abandoned or deserted.
Synonym: negligence, failure, neglect, evasion, desertion
Antonym: fulfilment, compliance, alertness, attentiveness

Usage: " He was suspended due to wilful dereliction of duty."

7. paucity

Meaning: scarcity; smallness of number; insufficiency; dearth
Synonym: lack, poverty, shortage, deficiency

Antonym: abundance, richness, affluence, sufficiency, plenty

Usage: "Keeping in mind the paucity of resources, we must use them economically."


8. preposterous

Meaning: contrary to nature, reason or sense;
                absurd; ridiculous; senseless; foolish

Synonym: ludicrous, ridiculous, idiotic, absurd, bizarre
Antonym: intelligent, logical, sensible, practical, possible, realistic
Usage: "The idea of not appearing in exam is preposterous."


9. scoff
Meaning: a) mock; to speak contemptuously (about); 
                  b) to eat (food) fast & greedily
Synonym: mock, deride, ridicule, scorn, belittle
Antonym: compliment, praise, admire, flatter
Usage: "When I explained him my project, he scoffed at the idea."

10. vindicate

Meaning: a) to clear of accusation, blame, suspicion, or doubt
                    with supporting arguments or proof.
                  b) to demonstrate or prove the value or validity of; 
                         justify;to provide justification for.
Synonym: acquit, absolve, exonerate, liberate, justify, corroborate, confirm

Antonym: blame, condemn, punish, oppose, neglect, ignore
Usage: "Her selection in examination vindicated her perseverance and hard work."

For practice, try to make some sentences with the help of these words.


Bonus Of the day

 Idiom of the day:"to hear something straight from the horse's mouth"

Meaning: "to hear something from the authoritative source"

Usage: "You have to believe me, I have heard it straight from the horse's mouth."
