English Vocabulary Word List#5


1.  astute

Meaning: clever; shrewd; having insight or acumen; perceptive
Synonym: intelligent, sharp, clever, subtle, discerning
Antonym: slow, stupid, dull, naive, ingenuous
Usage: "He was an astute businessman."

             
2. confide
Meaning: to disclose private matters in confidence
Synonym:  disclose, reveal, entrust, confess, admit
Antonym: hide, deny, conceal
Usage: " He confided his feelings to his friend."


3. devious
Meaning: deviating from the straight or direct course; not straightforward; 
not sincere or candid; deceitful

Synonym: oblique, indirect, shifty, untrustworthy, sly
Antonym: direct, straight, frank, honest, forthright, straightforward

Usage: "It seems that he has taken a devious route."


4. inviolable
Meaning: that must not or cannot be transgressed, dishonoured,
                        or broken; to be kept sacred.
Synonym  secure, sacrosanct, invulnerable, impregnable

Antonym: violable, irreverent, sacrilegious
Usage: "He promised her mother inviolably that he will be on time."



5.nonchalant
Meaning: (of a person or manner) feeling or appearing casually calm and relaxed; 
                  not displaying anxiety, interest, or enthusiasm.
Synonym: casual, aloof, unconcerned, careless
Antonym: careful, emotional, interested, responsive, involved
Usage: " After the dispute he tried to look nonchalant so that no
                       one will figure out what has happened."


6. throng
Meaning: a large group of people gathered or crowded closely together; a multitude
Synonym: crowd, flock, mob, swarm, multitude
Antonym: separate, scatter, dispel, disperse, spread out
Usage: "He somehow managed to come out of the throng."
7. wretched
Meaning: a) In a deplorable state of distress or misfortune; miserable;
                   b) despicable, contemptible, or mean
                   c) of very inferior quality
Synonym: woeful, deplorable, miserable, suffering, worthless

Antonym: happy, contented, cheerful, untroubled, decent, worthy

Usage: "The boy looked wretched with worn out clothes."



8. revelation
Meaning: a) the act of revealing or disclosing.
                 b) a sudden insight or idea

Synonym: disclosure, revealing, discovery, unveiling
Antonym: concealment, cover, hide
Usage: "Conclusion can be made only after the revelation of the true facts."



9. revel
Meaning: to take great pleasure or delight; make merry
Synonym: delight, enjoy, celebrate, relish, rejoice
Antonym: mourn, disappoint, distress, abstain
Usage: "There was nothing to revel about in such an insignificant achievement."


10. formidable

Meaning: .a) arousing fear, dread, or alarm.
                  b) inspiring awe, admiration, or wonder
                  c) difficult to defeat, overcome
Synonym: unnerving, challenging, difficult, daunting, terrific,
                      frightful, intimidating,impressive, powerful

Antonym: encouraging, comforting, cheering, pleasant.
Usage: "It was a formidable project causing awe."



For practice, try to make some sentences with the help of these words.


Bonus Of the day

 Idiom of the day: "the dice are loaded against someone"

Meaning: A person has little chance of succeeding in something,
                          perhaps for unfair reasons.

Usage: "When he lost his job his life became miserable-- all the dice were
                      loaded against him."
