English Vocabulary Word List#7 


1. afflict

Meaning: to cause suffering or unhappiness to; distress greatly
Synonym: trouble, burden, distress, stress, strain
Antonym: aid, delight, soothe, comfort, solace
Usage: "She was afflicted with severe cancer."
             
2. bliss
Meaning: perfect happiness; great joy.
Synonym: ecstasy, happiness, euphoria, joy, felicity
Antonym: distress, sorrow, sadness, misery, unhappiness
Usage: "Eating ice cream in a summer evening is a perfect bliss."

3. cornucopia
Meaning: a great abundance, overflowing supply

Synonym: abundance, copiousness, profuseness, richness
Antonym: shortage, scarcity, dearth, paucity

Usage: "There was a cornucopia of cherries in the store."

4. disaffected
Meaning: discontented and disloyal, as toward the government or toward authority.
Synonym: dissatisfied, rebellious, disloyal, hostile, alienated

Antonym: satisfied, loyal, contented, pleased, happy
Usage: "The political party issued a new manifesto to please the disaffected voters."


5. evince
Meaning: to show or demonstrate clearly, manifest; to make evident
Synonym: show, express, reveal, display, manifest
Antonym: hide, conceal, camouflage, disguise
Usage: "We appreciate your interest evinced in our products and policies."


6. fountainhead
Meaning: a) a principal or original source; a chief source; 
                  b) a spring from which a stream flows.
Synonym: beginning, origin, root, source, provenance
Usage: "Now I realised the fountainhead of the whole plan."

7. guise

Meaning: a)outward appearance or aspect;
                 b)false appearance; pretence
Synonym: appearance, pretence, show, mask, semblance, disguise

Antonym: reality, personality

Usage: "He was an enemy in the guise of a friend."


8. hobble
Meaning: a) to walk or move along haltingly or with difficulty;
                  b) to hamper the action or progress of ; impede

Synonym: limp, stagger, stumble, halt, restrict
Antonym: free, continue,release, move, walk
Usage: "The old man hobbled around the market with an umbrella in his hand."


9. ignominious

Meaning: characterized by or deserving shame or disgrace
Synonym: shameful, inglorious, humiliating, disgraceful
Antonym: honourable, reputable, creditable, worthy
Usage: "His acts were so ignominious that his parents refused to take
                him along with them."

10. forsake

Meaning:  abandon or leave; renounce or give up(something valued or pleasant)
Synonym: abandon, desert, leave, renounce, relinquish, forgo

Antonym: keep, hold, maintain
Usage: "I will never forsake my  habits for anyone."

For practice, try to make some sentences with the help of these words.



Bonus Of the day

 Idiom of the day: " through thick and thin"

Meaning: Despite difficult or troubling circumstances or setbacks; 
                       through good and bad times.

Usage: "He's always been there for me through thick and thin."
