English Vocabulary Word List#2

1. Squander
Meaning: Waste something( especially money or time) in a reckless or foolish manner,
                  to fail to take advantage of
Synonym: waste, misuse, dissipate, misspend
Antonym: save, accumulate, preserve
Usage: " The team squandered several good scoring chances"


2. Diligent
Meaning: Careful and persevering in carrying out tasks or duties;
                   showing care and effort in your work and duties.
Synonym: active, assiduous, industrious, careful, attentive
Antonym: idle, ignorant, inattentive, inactive
Usage: She is pursuing her work with great diligence.


3. Expedite
Meaning: To make something happen more quickly
Synonym: accelerate, hasten, quicken, rush
Antonym: delay, hinder, retard
Usage: His boss asked him to expedite the project.


4. Earnest
Meaning: Showing or expressing sincerity or seriousness
Synonym:   sincere, solemn, serious, sober, passionate    
Antonym: insincere, cold, indifferent, dispassionate
Usage: He made an earnest promise.


5. Guile
Meaning: Clever or crafty character or behaviour.
Synonym: craftiness, cunning, slyness, wiliness
Antonym: honesty, sincerity, candour, truthfulness
Usage: She is an honest girl, totally lacking in guile.


6. Quibble
Meaning: A slight objection or criticism; to argue or find fault over trivial matters.


Synonym: cavil, criticism, complain, fuss, niggle
Antonym: applaud, commend, praise, approve
Usage: Don't quibble over trivial matters, behave like grown ups!


7. Spate

Meaning: A large number of similar things coming in quick succession;
                      a sudden or strong outburst
Synonym: series, succession, string, outbreak

Antonym: fragment, handful, pittance

Usage: a spate of anger; a spate of books have already been released on this subject.


8. scrupulous
Meaning: (of a person) very careful to do things properly and correctly;
                  careful, thorough and extremely attentive to details
Synonym: careful, precise, principled, conscientious
Antonym: unscrupulous, unprincipled, careless
Usage: He is scrupulous about each and every work that he does.


9. Acquiesce

Meaning: Accept something reluctantly but without protest.
Synonym: accede, agree, assent
Antonym: refuse, reject, deny, rebuff
Usage: She denied initially but with constant pleading she had to acquiesce. 


10. Despise
Meaning: To dislike intensely; loathe; to regard with contempt or scorn.
Synonym: detest, hate, loathe, abhor, deplore
Antonym: like, respect, admire, adore
Usage: He despised all of them for being ill-mannered.


For practice, try to make some sentences with the help of these words.



Bonus Of the day

 Phrase of the day: "At one's wit's end"

Meaning: To be perplexed; unable to think what to do.

Usage: When he saw the old woman lying dead on the floor, he was at his wit's end.


 Idiom of the day: "cry over spilled milk"

Meaning: Complaining about the loss or failure from the past.

Usage: You should move on, there is no point crying over spilled milk.
