Words which are often confused with each other--List#1



Hello aspirants, there are certain pair of words in which either the words, look similar or they sound similar--- that is the reason they are often confused with each other. This confusion leads to negative marks in exams.

Therefore to avoid confusion we have selected such words and elaborated there meaning side by side.

CONFUSED WORDS LIST#1


 1. abomination & admonition

abomination: 1.) abhorrence; disgust; intense loathing
                        2.) a person or thing that is disgusting

admonition: 1.) cautionary advice or warning
                      2.) words expressive of strong disapproval.



2. affection & affectation

affection: a tender feeling towards another

affectation: an assumed manner of speech, dress or behaviour, especially one that is intended to impress others.



3. ascent & accent

ascent: 1.)the act or process of rising or going upward
2.) an advancement, especially in social status

accent: 1.) the characteristic mode of pronunciation of a person or group especially one that reveals social or geographical origin
2.) particular attention or emphasis.



4.  expedient & expedite

expedient: a means of attaining an end, especially one that is convenient but 
possibly improper or immoral.

expedite: make (an action or process) happen sooner or be accomplished more quickly.



5. fete & feat

fete: honour or entertain (someone)lavishly.

feat: an achievement that requires great courage, skill, or strength.



6. ingenuous & ingenious

ingenuous: 1.) lacking in cunning, guile or worldliness; innocent or naive.
2.) straightforward or frank; candid

ingenious: having great inventive skills and imagination; skilful or clever.


7. interment & intermittent

interment: burial, especially with ceremonial rites, the ritual placing of a corpse in a grave

intermittent: stopping or starting at intervals; periodic


8. loath & loathe

loath: unwilling or reluctant; disinclined

loathe: to dislike(someone or something) greatly; abhor, hate


9. rant & rent

rant: 1.) to speak or write in an angry or emotionally charged manner
2.) to express at length a complaint or negative opinion

rent: a payment made periodically for the right to occupy or use the property of another or for the use of a facility, equipment, or service provided by another




10.  writhe wrath

writhe: 1.)to make twisting bodily movement, as in pain or struggle
2.) to suffer emotional or physical distress as from embarrassment or anguish

wrath: intense anger, violent or stern indignation
