English Vocabulary Word List#3


1. Abettor

Meaning: a person who encourages or assist someone to do something wrong or illegal.
Synonym: accomplice, supporter, cooperator
Antonym: adversary, opponent
Usage:  "There were five more people who abetted him in the bank robbery."
             
2. Exasperate
Meaning: to irritate someone intensely; infuriate
Synonym: annoy, provoke, irritate, agitate, enrage
Antonym: appease, delight, comfort, pacify
Usage: "The boy exasperated him so much that he left the room."

3. Camouflage
Meaning: hide or disguise the presence of (a person, animal, or object)

Synonym:  disguise, hide, conceal, mask
Antonym: display, expose, flaunt,show

Usage: "A chameleon's ability to camouflage helps it to survive even 
             in dangerous situations."

4. Repent
Meaning: to feel remorse or regret for what one has done or fail to do
Synonym  regret, rue, remorse, bemoan

Antonym: delight, enjoy, relish, revel
Usage:  "He shouted aggressively on the children but when he went
                   home he repented his words."

5. Servile
Meaning: having or showing an excessive willingness to serve or please others.
Synonym: subservient, sycophantic, slavish
Antonym: assertive, bossy, dominant, aggressive
Usage: "The maid was servile and submissive."

6. Outlaw
Meaning: a criminal especially one who is trying to avoid being caught.
Synonym: criminal, bandit, crook
Usage: "The crime is committed by a band of outlaws."

7. Fray

Meaning: a heated dispute or intensely competitive situation; a fight ; a brawl
Synonym: fighting, dispute, combat, scrap

Antonym: truce

Usage: "A little bit of misunderstanding led to a fray among the group."





8. Commensurate
Meaning: in proportion; suitable in amount or quality compared to something else.

Synonym: proportionate, comparable, corresponding, equivalent
Antonym: inadequate, incommensurate, unsuitable, incompatible.
Usage: "Employee will get the salary commensurate with his performance."


9. Acquittal
Meaning: to find not guilty of a criminal  offence.
Synonym: absolution, exoneration, exemption
Antonym: conviction,blame, retention
Usage: "Mother was happy with son's acquittal as she believed him as innocent."

10. Mendacious

Meaning: not telling the truth; lying
Synonym: untruthful, dishonest, deceitful, false

Antonym: honest, sincere, truthful 
Usage: "A mendacious statement given by the politician."


For practice, try to make some sentences with the help of these words.



Bonus Of the day

 Idiom of the day: "play second fiddle"

Meaning: to be in a subordinate position; to have a lower rank or standing than someone else.

Usage: "He was unhappy, as his team leader was  playing second fiddle to him."
