English Vocabulary Word List#1


1. Abatement

Meaning: make or become less( such as noise, pain etc.); reduction in amount, degree, or intensity.

Synonym: decrease, decline, slowing, lessening, diminution, reduction, attenuation.
       
Antonym: expand, grow, increase, raise, rise, intensify, amplify.

Usage: We must take measures to abate pollution. 


2. Bleak

Meaning:
a) (of a landscape) lacking vegetation; bare; exposed.
b) (of a weather) cold & dreary.
c) not hopeful or encouraging; dismal; gloomy.

Synonym: gloomy, cheerless, cold, depressing, wretched

Antonym: jolly, blithe, joyful, merry, encouraging

Usage:
a) bleak hills; bleak mountains.
b) bleak winter day
c) His future looks bleak.


3. Contemplate

Meaning:
a) look at or consider something thoughtfully.
b) consider the possibility of something; plan.

Synonym: ponder, foresee, intend, mull over, think deeply

Antonym: ignore, reject, disregard, neglect.

Usage:
a) He stood contemplating the clouds.
b) He is contemplating a visit to Mumbai( i.e. may visit Mumbai)

          


4. Deplorable

Meaning: should be condemned; completely unacceptable; shockingly bad in quality.

Synonym: contemptible, despicable, mean, cheap.
      
Antonym: honourable, reputable, admirable, commendable, noble, honest.

Usage: The speech given by the minister was deplorable.


5. Exonerate

Meaning: declare somebody free from blame.

Synonym: acquittal, absolve, discharge, pardon, exempt

Antonym: blame, condemn, convict, punish, accuse

Usage: She was exonerated from all the responsibilities for the misshapen.


6. Frivolous

Meaning:
a) not sensible or serious; foolish and light-hearted
b) silly or wasteful

Synonym: foolish, idiotic, impractical, senseless, childish

Antonym: intelligent, sensible, wise, serious, thoughtful

Usage: I think the project you are dealing with is frivolous.


7. Gruesome

Meaning: frightful; filling one with horror or disgust: horrifying.

Synonym: horrible, ghastly, frightful, horrific, terrible

Antonym: attractive, delightful, enjoyable, enticing, pleasurable

Usage: The night was dark, gruesome with no lights ON.


8. Haughty

Meaning: arrogant; proud & disdainful; seeming to consider yourself better than other people.

Synonym: snobbish, arrogant, contemptuous, egotistic, proud

Antonym: humble, shy, generous, meek, gentle, modest.

Usage: Due to her haughty and arrogant behaviour, no one wants to talk to her.


9. Incompetent

Meaning: inability to perform; lack of competence; not having or showing the necessary skills to do something successfully.

Synonym: unskillful, unable, inadequate, incapable, inefficient, inept

Antonym: able, capable, competent, skilled, expert, qualified

Usage: He is too incompetent to perform this task.


10. Jovial

Meaning: very cheerful and good-humoured.



Synonym: festive, gleeful, blithesome, jolly, merry

Antonym: aggrieved, abject, dejected, depressed, despondent

Usage: He is a friendly jovial fellow.


For practice, try to make some sentences with the help of these words.



Bonus Learning:

 Phrase of the day: " beef something up"

Meaning: "to add strength or substance to something".

Usage: Security has been beefed up around the premises as ministers are expected to visit the place.


 Idiom of the day: "let sleeping dogs lie"

Meaning: "do not invite trouble; leave something alone if it might cause trouble".

Usage: She thought, it would be better not to discuss the matter further and just let sleeping dogs lie.
