English Vocabulary Word List#4


1. corroborate

Meaning: confirm or give support to (a statement, theory, or finding);
                   make more certain
Synonym:  confirm, verify, endorse, authenticate
Antonym: contradict, invalidate, disagree, disapprove
Usage: "He corroborated my presence in the office that day."
             
2. affront
Meaning: To insult intentionally, especially openly; offend
Synonym: insult, offence, indignity, provocation
Antonym: compliment, respect, flattery, appeasement
Usage: "Such an affront will not be tolerated."

3. indignant
Meaning: anger aroused by something felt to be unfair, unworthy, or wrong

Synonym: anger, rage, fury, wrath, ire
Antonym: content, cheerful, pleased, happy

Usage: "The mass expressed its indignation over the matter and protested."




4. prudent
Meaning: careful or wise in handling practical matters; 
                  exercising good judgement or common sense
Synonym:  cautious, careful, wary, discreet

Antonym: imprudent, careless, indiscreet, heedless
Usage: "She always takes a prudent and cautious approach while handling matters."


5.vain
Meaning: producing no result; useless; having or showing excessive
                  pride in one's appearance or accomplishments; conceited.
Synonym: fruitless, futile, conceited, egotistic
Antonym: profitable, successful, worthwhile, modest
Usage: a vain attempt;" Your efforts will not go in vain ."

6. precarious

Meaning: a) dependent on chance; uncertain
                  b) likely to fall or collapse; not securely held or in position
Synonym: uncertain, unsure, insecure, risky, unsafe
Antonym: certain, sure, secure, safe
Usage:  " He walked up on a precarious ladder."

7. discern

Meaning: to recognize or understand as being different or distinct;
                    to perceive with the eyes; to distinguish mentally.
Synonym: distinguish, determine, detect, see, perceive, notice, observe

Antonym: overlook, miss, confuse, doubt, neglect, disregard

Usage: "He couldn't discern between right and wrong."


8. loath
Meaning: reluctant or unwilling; disinclined 

Synonym: unwilling, against, resisting, averse
Antonym: keen, willing, eager, avid, enthusiastic
Usage: "He is loath to admit a mistake."


9. cognizant
Meaning: aware; having knowledge; fully informed.
Synonym: aware, familiar, informed, versed, conscious
Antonym: unaware, ignorant, indifferent, unknowledgeable
Usage: "He was cognizant of the situation."

10. inadvertent

Meaning: not deliberate or considered; marked by or resulting from carelessness
Synonym: unintentional, accidental, unplanned

Antonym: deliberate, intentional, planned
Usage: "He said that it was an inadvertent mistake."



For practice, try to make some sentences with the help of these words.



Bonus Of the day

 Idiom of the day: "take it on the chin"

Meaning: accept misfortune courageously or stoically

Usage: "One of her great strength is her ability to take it on the chin."
