English Vocabulary Word List


1. ominous

Meaning:  menacing, threatening, giving a suggestion about something bad that
                     is going to happen; ill predictions
Synonym: baleful, inauspicious,sinister, foreboding
Antonym: encouraging, favourable, auspicious, promising
Usage: "There was an ominous silence in the house, and everyone was petrified."

             
2. surreptitious
Meaning: done, acquired, etc, in secret or by improper means; operating by stealth
Synonym: furtive, sneaking, stealthy, secret, fraudulent
Antonym: open, frank, obvious, blatant, manifest, honest
Usage: "The police inspector noticed their surreptitious activities."


3. trite
Meaning: not evoking interest because of overuse or repetition; hackneyed

Synonym: banal, hackneyed, common, unoriginal, ordinary, routine
Antonym: new, interesting, original, fresh, exciting, uncommon

Usage: "The book is full of trite elaborations of nature."


4. expedient
Meaning: a) suitable or efficient for accomplishing a purpose;
                 b) convenient but based on a concern for self-interest rather than                                        principle;
                 c) convenient or advisable
Synonym:   appropriate, convenient, suitable, advisable, recommendable

Antonym: inexpedient, inappropriate, unsuitable
Usage: "It is expedient that you go and study."



5. palliate 
Meaning: to make less severe or intense; mitigate;
 to make( an offence) seem less serious
Synonym: extenuate, alleviate, relieve, assuage, allay
Usage: "Doctor advised her a medicine to palliate severe head ache."


6. sly 

Meaning: clever or cunning; stealthy or surreptitious; 
Synonym: clever, crafty, furtive, insidious, secret
Antonym: honest, trustworthy, open, ingenuous
Usage: "He is of sly nature, that's why he has limited friend."


7. coercion

Meaning: To pressure, intimidate, or force(someone) into doing something
Synonym: force,compel, intimidate,  hale, pressurize

Usage: "Coercion is not allowed in campaigning, otherwise the candidate will be disqualified."



8. forfend
Meaning: a) to defend, protect, or secure.
b) prevent the occurrence of; prevent from happening

Synonym: avert, prevent, rule out, ward off, preclude
Usage: "He forfend taking a nap during office hours."



9. excursion
Meaning: a) a usually short journey made for pleasure; an outing
                 b) a digression or deviation; diversion
                 
Synonym: outing, expedition, trip, tour, jaunt, deviation
Usage: "The psychiatrist recommended a full day excursion to the patient."

10.  solemnize

Meaning:a) to celebrate or observe with dignity;
                b) to perform with formal ceremony .
                c) to make serious or grave
Synonym: celebrate, commemorate, keep, observe
Usage: "Their marriage was solemnised in a nearby temple."

Bonus Of the day

 Idiom of the day: " have one's head in the clouds"

Meaning: to be impractical or fanciful; be unaware of what is going on.

Usage:"Saloni has never been attentive in the class , she has her head in the clouds. "
