Important Tips & Tricks to Improve vocabulary?

The first and foremost step to learn any language is to make your vocabulary strong. If you are good at vocabulary, you’d be able to frame a sentence properly. So vocabulary plays a vital role in any language.

English vocabulary not only helps in written exam but it is also useful for interview point of view. If you are good at the English language you can speak more fluently.

Here we are going to discuss some ideas or habits that can help us master the vocabulary:

1. Make a Habit to Read:

Reading is a method through which you will encounter new words. It will not only teach you a new word, it will also give you an idea that how to use that word in a sentence. So reading is essential.
Make it a habit to read something new for at least one hour a day. Many people say it is hard to keep the habit of reading.

So what is the solution?

The solution is, read what “interests” you.

Generally what people do is, they take a newspaper and try to read whole of it and finally when get bored, they just give up.

Instead of that one should read what he/she likes—be it cinema, sports, technology, arts—anything which awakens interest in you; which incites you to know more. This way, you will be able to read more.

2. Write:

The next vital step towards excelling vocabulary is to write as much as you can so that you remember the words for a longer time.

Writing is necessary to practise new words; framing new sentences and it will lead you to a better understanding of the words.

So here a question arises that “what to write”?

Whenever you learn a new word, try to make 2-3 sentences with the help of it. You can try making a short paragraph by learning 2 or more related words and correlating them in the paragraph.

This will boost your confidence and will help you memorize all the words at once.

Suppose we learn:

Insolent: Ill-mannered
Rebuke: Scold

Then we can make a sentence using them:

“You should stop being insolent and listen to your mother otherwise you would have to listen to her rebuke.”

3. Start Journaling:

Journaling is writing your thoughts, daily experiences or your observations into a diary or a journal. It is very useful practice both in terms of improving vocabulary as well as in dealing with stress.

When you inscribe whatever is in your mind into a paper, your mind gets decluttered and new ideas start flowing into your mind. You will be more “focused” and able to implement new words.

So own a diary and write whatever clicks in your mind. Make it a daily habit and see the magic.

4. Play Games or Quizzes:

This is the most interesting way to learn new words without getting bored. Try various quizzes and games which are words related such as crosswords, scrabble, finding words, anagrams and many more.

5. Learn 5 New Words Daily:

Make it a habit to learn at least 5 new words daily either from magazines or novels or from any source which you like.

This will help you enrich your vocabulary each day and in a week assign one day to revise all the words learnt so that you will not forget the previously learnt words.

6. Discuss with Friends and Family:

Whatever you have learned discuss it with your friends and family and try to converse with them in English.

Try using the words that you have learnt recently, this will boost your confidence and constantly practising will make you more fluent.

7. Listening to Podcasts:

Podcasts are not very popular in India until now but if you like an auditory medium of learning rather than visual, listening to podcasts and audio-books is a good choice for you.

Podcasts are digital audio films available on the Internet; which can be downloaded and listened to whenever you like. This option is suitable for people who are always on-the-go. Also, podcasts are not that much expensive as compared to printed material.

There is one more reason why I am advocating the use of podcasts is that it gives us an idea about new words, their usage and last but not the least --"how to pronounce them". So give it a try, it is interesting.

Here I have tried to sum up the most resulted tips and trick to learn English vocabulary and new words to make your English learning easy.
